National School Sport Week 28 June - 2 July
Strive for Five

Can you do Five hours of PE and Sport in a week?   This is the challenge to all young people across the School Sport Partnership during National School Sport Week as we challenge you to 'Strive for Five'.

Throughout the week there will be all sorts of sporting heroes, coaches, competitions and activities taking place across the SSP under one of the seven Olympic and Paralympic values of Excellence, Friendship, Determination, Equality, Inspiration, Courage and Respect.Strive for Five

For every hour of PE and Sport that is completed an Olympic ring will be earned until all five have been gained and an Olympic gold medal is achieved.    Charts will be put into every class and every young person can take part, prizes will be given out at events, and schools can win prizes for being the most Olympic and having the highest number of hours.

Please remember to tell us about your event and to capture them on camera so that we can showcase your work on our website.   Blog about this on the London2012 Get Set Network and you could get to use the London 2012 logo!

Congratulations Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School

The first school in Staffordshire to join the London 2012 Get Set network is taking part in one of the London 2012 Enterprise Programmes, 'Have you got what it takes?'.

Cardinal Griffin Catholic High School officially joined the Get Set network in February and has been invited to take part in this competition which could see them entered into the national final where there is a chance to win a trip to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, a tour of the Olympic Park or a visit from top athletes.

'Have you got what it takes?' is a competitive enterprise activity for students aged between 11 and 14. Around thirty students in Year 9 at Cardinal Griffin will take part working in teams of five or six. The activity will be delivered by the Staffordshire Partnership, the Education Business Partnership for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Each team will take on the role of a company trying to convince the organisers of the London 2012 Games that they have the flair, business acumen, commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values - and the perfect venue - to host a Pre-Games training camp.

Having convinced London 2012 that their company can fulfil all the criteria to become an "approved host" each company then goes on to make a presentation (a pitch in the real world of business) to persuade a national sports team to use their brilliant training camp in the run up to the games.

The winning team will be decided on 22 July by a judging panel which will include a representative from Cannock Hockey Club, one of Staffordshire's potential Pre-Games Training Camps for London 2012, and Chris Kirkland, Staffordshire Co-ordinator for the 2012 Games.

School Sport Co-ordinator at Cardinal Griffin, Rose Brown, said; "By joining the Get Set network we have already proved we are committed to living the Olympic and Paralympic Values, but it has also provided opportunities for our students to really get involved and inspired by London 2012."

Sporting young people visit the Olympic Park

A group of young people from Staffordshire aged 13 -19 years old had the opportunity to experience the Olympic Park first hand, when they visited the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games recently.

The visit, which also included a tour of the new Wembley Stadium, was designed to show the group of young Get Set leaders how the area is preparing for the Games, which will see over 15,000 athletes and millions of people gather to enjoy sporting and cultural action over 60 days.

Get Set is the London 2012 educational programme which offers children and young people aged 3-19 years from schools and colleges across the UK to learn more about the Olympic and Paralympic values and play their part in the 2012 Games.

Through its website, Get Set provides a range of flexible learning resources including games, fact sheets, films news articles and more.

To date, over 240 schools across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have signed up to become a part of the Get Set programme which will enhance learning right across the curriculum through sport, culture and education. This puts the County in the top ten in the country for the number of registrations. These schools can now apply to join the Get Set Network in recognition of their commitment to promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values, which will see them rewarded with a licence to use the London 2012 logo.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture and one of the Staffordshire representatives for the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games said: "Get Set is an exciting programme which is bringing the inspiration of the London 2012 Games into the classrooms and lives of young people across the UK. We are delighted that we have so many of our Staffordshire schools already registered with the programme and would urge others to do so now by visiting www.london2012.com/getset to enjoy the many benefits that Get Set can bring to children and young people in the county."

Ben Warren aged 17 from Newcastle added: "Our visit to the Olympic Park was inspirational and I'm excited that London 2012 will be an opportunity for us to see the best athletes in the world in our own country. There will also be loads of new opportunities for young people to get involved and as a Young Ambassador and Get Set Leader I will be promoting this in my area."

The Skipping World Record was SUCCESSFUL so Congratulations to everyone that took part.   This is fantatic news and refelcts all the hard work that went into the day by all of you.   Certificates will be distributued soon to all particiapting schools.
