As the London 2010 Olympic and Paralmpic Games draw closer, our efforts to transform Physical Education and Sport through the creation of a world class system are increasing. It is an ambition which lies at the heart of the legacy aims of the London Games. Central Government is working to deliver Public Service Agreement (PSA) 22 indicator five, which is to "Deliver a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and Sport. The PESSYP Strategy sets out how the success measure will be reached through the delivery of the five hour offer.

It is through the PESSYP Strategy and the 10 work strands that the Partnership and Cluster continues to focus all its work.

Congratulations

Cardinal Griffin was awarded in February at the West Midlands 2012 Conference held at Burton Albion FC the "London 2012 Get Set Education Award". This was the first award to go to a Staffordshire school and we were very proud of the work the YA's had done to achieve this. Young Ambassadors Laura Graham and Amy Massey collected the award on behalf of the school for their enthusiasm and volunteering to promote the values of the Olympic Games.

This means Cardinal Griffin can use the London 2012 logo on its stationary, newsletters and web site. It is our challenge now to gain the award for the primary schools in the cluster in recognition for their contribution.

Competition Strand

Multi Skills Intra and Inter School Competitions.

Since September all the children in our primary schools in Year 1 and Year 2 have participated in an intra school Multi Skills and Indoor Athletics competition. This has been run by Nigel Camacho (competition manager), School Sport Co-ordinator and a team of Sports Leaders from Year 10. The results have been collated to make a virtual inter school competition.

The ABC's (Agility, Balance and Co-ordination) formed the basis of the Multi Skills work while the Indoor Athletics focused on running, throwing and jumping events.

Partnership Competitions

Tag Rugby, High 5 Netball, Football and Trampoline competitions have been run across the partnership this term by the competitions manager. These events have engaged many schools and children increasing the opportunities for participation and experience of competitive situations. Winning teams are sent through to the County Games.

VI Form

This term and next we are offering an inter school VI Form Badminton and Rounders Competition. The Badminton was held at Kingsmead in March and proved to be successful. Cardinal Griffin students taking a creditable second place position.

Intra House Competitions

This is another competitive opportunity for students to participate in during school hours and many schools have organised and run competitions from Cross Country, Football, Netball, and Cycling. The Sports Council at Griffin are keen to add competitions during the lunch hour in Dodgeball next term.

PESSYP data asks for the number of intra school competitive events held each year and challenges us to run one per term, per year group.

Leadership and Volunteering Strand

Top Link Conference

Four Year 10 Sports Leaders were given the opportunity to attend the Staffordshire Top Link Conference in February.  The conference was held at Stafford Sports College and involved a day of Leadership training where the students acquired skills and ideas for future leadership and volunteering in schools and in the community.

Dermot Gascoyne the professional, International Heavy Weight Boxer was present to inspire and motivate the students in his role as a mentor. The girls enthusiastically threw themselves into the day and came away buzzing with ideas for future events.

Young Ambassadors

Cardinal Griffin has four Young Ambassadors in Year 11 who have been working alongside the Yr 13 YA to take over their role next year. They meet regularly and have attended YA Conferences organised by the Partnership. They have delivered motivational assemblies to the primary schools and run poster competitions on the values of the Olympic Games this term.

Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy in March was held at Aldersley Stadium Wolverhampton and gave VI form the opportunity to gain NGB Awards to equip them with delivery in our schools and give them the opportunity to gain more awards.

Playground to Podium Disability Strand.

An Aquatics day was run at Rugeley Leisure Centre in January targeting KS3 students via the SENCOs in the Partnership schools. Another dry day is planned in the summer term.

CPD Strand

Half term cluster meetings give PLT's up to date information about the PESSYP Strategy and the Five hour offer and monitoring and collation of data in readiness for the Governments data collection.

In March, we were grateful to St. Joseph's Rugeley for hosting a Cluster Gymnastics inset for

KS 1/ 2 delivery. This was run by Caroline Holden from SCC and attended by colleagues from all schools.

Step into Sport

The numbers of KS4 /5 students who have registered onto the Step into Sport Passport has steadily increased this term. The students gain recognition for their volunteering hours in school and the community at a Partnership, County and National Level.

Sports Leaders

Year 10 Sports Leaders have worked hard helping to deliver a range of sessions in our primary schools and are regularly invited to help with after school clubs, extra curriculum, Real Time activities.

Playground Leaders

Year 6 Buddies / Playground Leaders continue to help run the lunchtime activities and Wake Up Shake Up. Year 5 will be trained in the summer term to take over these responsibilities.

Gifted and Talented Academy

Two children from Yr 6 from each primary school in the Griffin and Kingsmead Cluster were selected to attend the G and T Academy on a Monday after school at Kingsmead run by Coach Greg Allsop. The children have participated in a range of challenging activities from Trampolining, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Fitness Skills, Football and many more. There are plans for an away day at Shugborough in July for these children. This has been very popular and well supported.

Sport Unlimited Strand

Funding under this strand continued this term for the Griffin Cycling Club. Some Saturday morning sessions were run last term by Mr. Shenton to overcome the dark nights and bad weather. These  proved popular. Workshops for Yr 5 /6 are running on Wednesdays after school in May /June.

Handball also received funding for the community club which runs on Monday evenings at the Griffin and retention numbers are high. Leaders from these sessions helped deliver a workshop for over 30 children from St. Mary's and St. Josephs Rugeley in March.

Forthcoming Events

National School Sport Week June 28th - July 2nd

The Partnership is planning to set a five hour challenge to all children during this week hoping that a large percentage will participate in 5 hours of PE and School/Community Sport.

They will gain stickers to match the 5 Olympic Rings to match their hours of participation. Olympic role models have been booked to visit schools to inspire and motivate the children and coaches and clubs are helping to run sessions in schools.
