Kingsmead Cluster

As the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games draw closer, our efforts to transform Physical Education (PE)  and sport through the creation of a world class system are increasing. It is an ambition which lies at the heart of the legacy aims of the London Games.

Central government is working to deliver Public Service Agreement (PSA) 22, indicator 5, which is to : 'Deliver a successful Olympi c Games and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and sport - through the creation of a world-class system for PE and sport'. The PE and Sport Strategy for Young People sets out how this success measure will be reached through the delivery of the five hour offer.

The Five Hour Offer

Increasing the numbers of young people taking up the five hour offer is an ambitious yet achievable goal which requires a range of providers involved with school, community and club sport to work to gether at local level.

For five to 16 year olds, the expectation is that schools will provide three of the five hours ; two hours through high quality PE within the curriculum and at least one hour a week of sport out of school hours on school site. Local community and club providers will seek to ensure that an additional two hours a week are available.

For 16 to 19 year olds in education, schools / colleges will be expected to work in partnership with community groups and clubs to ensure an appropriate three hour offer is available.

Leadership and Volunteering

Year 11 students Amy Hawkins and Rebecca Mist recently attended the Young Ambassadors Conference at Aelfgar Rugeley Centre. From September, their role will be to establish a college sports council and develop intra-competitive opportunities, particularly in the sixth form, that reflect the views and opinions of all the students.

In addition, a number of our sixth-form level two sports leaders attended a leadership academy at Aldersley Athletics Village. The academy provided excellent opportunities for our students to further develop their leadership skills, and gain additional sport-related qualifications.

Competition

There was an excellent level of participation and performance during the recent Year 7/8/9 intra-form football and netball competitions at the college. Additional intra-school competitions in athletics, tennis and rounders  are planned for the summer term.

Five Ways PS, West Hill PS, Hazel Slade PS and  St. Peter's PS participated in ourKs2 badminton competition at the college sportshall. Silver medals were awarded to the highest scoring mixed doubles pair from each primary school, with Brad Pearse  and Rea Elsmore from West Hill PS securing the gold medal position as overall winners.

Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week

In July, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will be taking place across the country, helping to motivate pupils and fulfil objectives for PE and school sport using the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Values. These values are inspiration, excellence, friendship, determination, respect and courage.

Across the Fair Oak cluster, all schools will be participating in various intra-sports competitions. Students and pupils have been set a  challenge to participate in five hours of P.E., school sport and local club events during the week.

Kingsmead Primary Schools Gifted and Talented Multi-Skill Academy

In partnership with the Cardinal Griffin Cluster, eighteen Year 6 pupils from nine primary schools were targeted as gi fted and talented in P.E. and school sport. With the support of Gregg Allsopp , sports coach for the district council, the pupils have participated in a number of activities at the college sportshall including badminton, rock climbing and athletics. The academy will culminate in July with a 1-day team challenge at Shugborough Outdoor Education Centre.
