TOP UP Swimming will be running at Rugeley Leisure Centre on Wednesdays throughout the year if you are interested in your school taking part in this programme please contact us.

Swimming and water safety form an essential part of a child's education whilst at school and extra lessons are being funded and provided by the Government's National School Sport Strategy to help pupils gain confidence in the water and become  stronger swimmers. Top Up Swimming forms part of the Government's drive to improve PE and sport in schools. Top Up Swimming is an intervention designed to enable every child to achieve the KS2 standard in swimming at primary school which is to swim 25 metres unaided.

The scheme was extremely successful with pupils gaining certificates and medals for their efforts in the pool. Pupils completed a block of intensive swimming lessons delivered by a qualified swimming intsructor from Phoenix Swimming Club. The swimmers completed a variety of challenges to achieve specific targets. Everyone involved in the scheme has seen the brilliant progress the pupils have made and have commented on the value of this structured initiative. One pupil from Redhill Primary explained 'I'm loads more confident in the water and I have got better at my front crawl. I loved swimming underwater through the hoops, I wouldn't have done that before!'

This Summer term we are expanding the programme to reach more pupils from Cannock and Rugeley and will be delivering sessions at Blake Valley Swimming Pool and Rugeley Leisure Centre.
